Garlic for Roses: How to Use Garlic to Protect Rose Bushes from Aphids, Pests, and Common Garden Problems

Did you know that a few garlic cloves could become useful allies in your rose garden?

Garlic isn’t just a popular kitchen ingredient. Gardeners have also used it for generations as a companion plant and as an ingredient in homemade garden sprays.
Its strong aroma and natural sulfur-containing compounds make it an interesting option for gardeners looking to reduce their reliance on conventional pesticides.

Here are two simple ways to use garlic around your roses!

1.Plant Garlic Around Your Rose Bushes
One of the easiest ways to use garlic is to plant it near your roses.

Garlic releases distinctive aromatic compounds, and some gardeners believe its presence may discourage certain insects.

How to do it:
Choose 4–6 healthy garlic cloves.
Plant them approximately 5 cm (2 inches) deep, with the pointed ends facing upward.
Space the cloves about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
Keep them at least 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) away from the main rose stems.
Water lightly and allow the garlic to grow naturally.
Garlic and roses can share a garden bed, provided they have enough space, sunlight, and nutrients.

Important: Although companion planting with garlic is popular, strong scientific evidence that it reliably prevents rose pests or fungal diseases is limited.

2.Make a Homemade Garlic Spray for Roses
Garlic contains sulfur compounds that have shown insect-repellent and antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies.
A homemade garlic spray may help discourage some soft-bodied insects, but its effectiveness varies, and it is not a proven replacement for established pest treatments.

Ingredients
4–5 garlic cloves
500 ml water
A spray bottle
A fine strainer

Preparation
Step 1: Crush or finely chop the garlic cloves.

Step 2: Add them to 500 ml of water.

Step 3: Allow the mixture to steep for several hours.

Step 4: Strain thoroughly to remove all garlic pieces.

Step 5: Pour the liquid into a clean spray bottle.

How to Apply
Test the mixture on a few rose leaves first and wait 24–48 hours to check for damage.
If no damage appears, lightly spray a small affected area, particularly where aphids are present.
Apply in the early morning or evening, avoiding hot weather and strong sunlight.
Be careful: Homemade garlic sprays can burn sensitive foliage, and their concentration is difficult to standardize. Avoid spraying open flowers, and stop immediately if leaves become discolored or damaged.

3.Can Garlic Help Against Aphids and Fungal Diseases?
Garlic is often recommended as a natural solution for common rose problems, but it’s important to understand its limitations.
Aphids: Garlic sprays may discourage some insects, but washing aphids off with water or using an appropriately labeled insecticidal soap is generally more reliable.
Black spot: Garlic is not a proven treatment. Removing infected leaves and improving air circulation are more dependable preventive measures.
Powdery mildew: Garlic extracts have shown some antifungal activity in experiments, but homemade sprays are not a reliably established treatment.
General rose health: Growing garlic nearby adds diversity to the garden, but it does not directly fertilize roses or guarantee healthier flowers.

4.Extra Tips for Beautiful, Healthy Roses
For the best results, combine companion planting with good rose care.
Provide at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.
Water deeply at the base of the plants.
Remove diseased leaves and fallen debris.
Prune to improve air circulation.
Inspect new growth regularly for aphids and other pests.
Use suitable, tested treatments when infestations become serious.
Garlic is an inexpensive and interesting addition to a rose garden.

Whether planted around rose bushes or cautiously tested as a homemade spray, it offers gardeners another way to experiment with natural gardening techniques.

However, garlic works best as a possible supplementary measure, not as a guaranteed cure for pests or plant diseases.
